Japan is a small country. I think it is about the size of California. It has lots of mountains, and it is prone to earthquakes because it sits on the edge of the pacific rim. However, lots of people live in Japan. And a lot of them live in Tokyo. My mom's side of the family all live in Tokyo. When you're on a train in Japan during rush hour, you have to cram in. And there are station attendants whose job is to push as many people onto the train. You don't really hang on, since you are smushed against 10 other people. I can be fun the first time, but making it a daily activity in order to get to and from work doesn't seem fun at all.
The world's busiest Starbucks is located in front of Shibuya station in Tokyo. Above, is a picture of the main intersection with the Starbucks in the background when the light is green for traffic to go. Doesn't seem that bad. Sure, there are a lot of cars on the narrow roads, but it seems manageable
And then WHAM!!!! The Black Sea!
The intersection is suddenly filled with all of Tokyo trying to get from one side of the street to the other. And at the same time, that Starbucks in the background probably gets about 10 customers a minute. And they are very efficient at taking and making orders. There is always a server in line taking people's orders as they come in, kind of like at In n Out where there is someone taking orders from teh drive thru lane during rush hour...(mmm...In n Out...) I didn't know that there were that many people in Tokyo who could not live without coffee, but apparently there are.
